Mellow the dog has been walking the streets of DuPont, Pennsylvania, with his owner Kevin Curry twice a day since September 2019.
Unfortunately, the rescue dog has recently been diagnosed with rapidly progressing lymphoma, so Curry took Mellow for one last walk before saying goodbye.
"It's a touching and heartbreaking story," says K.J. Warunek, who lives in the neighborhood. "There were at least 25 people on the first block. The next block had another 20. I'm going to say that's how the whole walk went."
According to Warunek, Curry left heartbreaking notes in neighbors' mailboxes, letting them know about Mellow's final walk. The dog was walking slowly because of his terminal cancer he had difficulty walking.
"Regardless of how well we know each other, you have made my life so much richer than any rescue dog could have ever hoped for," these were the words Mellow "wrote" in a tearful note that Warunek posted on Facebook. "I am so grateful to have such caring neighbors and to live in a community that takes such good care of each other. I'm not sure exactly when I'll be leaving, but every day for the past few weeks has been a struggle for me to get around the neighborhood like I used to. I would like to say goodbye face to face if you are free. Come out to pat me on the head or rub my belly, and I will be eternally grateful."
Curry also added a map of the route and $5, with which he asked to buy a gift for the dog or donate it to charity.
All the neighborhood went outdoors to say goodbye to Mellow and give him treats.
"Others just stood in the back and cried so as not to upset Kevin," Warunek recalled. "However, Mellow knew he was the belle of the ball — he was jumping around."

She added that the neighbors threw the biggest send-off to the dog his owner could have ever imagined.
"He even got free ice cream at our local store," she said, noting that despite his illness, the dog lived his best life with Curry.
